Oxidised LDL in Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Case-Control Study
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: The metabolism of many fats, including free fatty acids and oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) play an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to determine the association between circulating ox-LDL and acute myocardial infarction. Materials and Methods: The case control study conducted on 43 patients with acute myocardial infarction and 43 volunteers who had no signs, symptoms or history of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease and matched to patients for age and sex (control). We used ELISA kit (company of Mercodia, Sweden) to measure circulating ox-LDL. The data recorded and then analyzed by SPSS software version 16. Statistical significance was considered as p-value less than 0.05. Results: Two study groups significantly were no differences as age, sex, smoking, family history of ischemic heart disease, hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus type 2, and disease existence. There was a significant difference between the mean concentration of ox-LDL in AMI and control group as it was higher in the patients (2.14 ± 1.67 µg/ml) than the controls (1.03 ± 1.18 µg/ml, p= 0.001). Using logistic regression analysis and entering variables of study in the model, ox-LDL factor was independently associated with the risk of myocardial infarction (OR= 1.74, CI95%: 1.23-2.45, P= 0.002). Conclusions: Elevated ox-LDL is associated with the acute myocardial infarction and may also be helpful in the early detection of myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND The association between oxidised low density lipoprotein (OxLDL) and cerebral infarction is suspected but not established. OBJECTIVES To determine whether plasma OxLDL is a useful marker for monitoring oxidative stress in stroke patients. METHODS Plasma OxLDL concentrations were determined in 56 stroke patients with cerebral infarction (n = 45) or cerebral haemorrhage (n = 11), a...

A cute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity. Substantial data support a plausible role for oxidised LDL (oxLDL) in the aetiology of this disease. 2 The human OLR1 (or LOX 1) gene encodes the endothelium derived lectin-like oxidised low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) receptor, which is involved in the binding, internalisation, and proteolytic degradation of ...

OBJECTIVES Oxidized LDL has been attributed a key role in the development of atherosclerosis. Previous studies have demonstrated increased plasma levels of oxidized LDL in patients with established coronary artery disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate if plasma oxidized LDL also predicts risk for development of coronary heart disease (CHD). DESIGN We used a nested case-cont...

Technetium-99m-pyrophosphate (99mTc-PYP) has been used, in combination with thallium-201, to estimate the site and extent of myocardial infarcts. We report a case of acute myocardial infarction with severe coronary disease in which the distribution of 99mTc-PYP was extensive. A 78-year-old man presented with dyspnea, and a diagnosis of non-ST-segment elevation acute myocar...
